Who We Are
To understand who we are, you first need to understand the person who came up with the idea for our foundation, and who's memory continues to inspire us today. Emily Ann Field was born on March 31, 1990, to proud parents, Craig and Tammy Field. Emily studied dance for thirteen years and grew to love ballet, tap, jazz, modern, and hip-hop dancing, and was an honor roll student and Southeast Guilford High School where she graduated from on June 8th, 2008. After Graduation Emily planned to attend Duke University in 2009 to study law, but, at age 17, in January of 2008, Emily's journey with Ewing's Sarcoma began.
As she fought her battle with cancer, she became increasingly concerned for the other patients who were fighting their own battles with cancer and their families who struggled along with them. She knew that along with the monumental physical and emotional tolls, there were also financial tolls to pay. It's not clothing and shelter, but it's food, money for gas and parking, and the things that they have to do to get their children treated. After seeing how the lack of money kept some families from visiting children in the cancer unit at Brenner, Emily wanted to use donations given to her to help families pay for parking or meals. Emily's longest stay was 43 days - which is not an uncommon length.
Miss Emily Ann Field passed away surrounded by her family on Saturday, November 22nd, 2008. [You can watch a memorial of Emily accompanied with music composed and performed by Dr. Doug Ririe and his daughter Katherine below] Through the hard work of her parents and a group of dedicated volunteers who wanted to see Emily's desire to help those around her materialize, the Emily's Kids Foundation came to life on September 3rd, 2009.
The Emily's Kids Foundation is an all-volunteer non-profit 501(c)(3) with a charitable solicitation license in the state of North Carolina. Our foundation is unique, not only in its mission, but in how it is run. Emily's Kids is run completely by dedicated volunteers and, as such, is able to apply 100% of gifts to the support of families with children battling cancer.
