About

Strength, Courage, Dignity

Emily’s Kids Foundation, Inc. was founded in memory of a special young woman, Emily Ann Field. In January, 2008, when she was 17 years old, she was diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma.

Ewing’s Sarcoma is a genetically inherited cancer that strikes children between the ages of 8 and 20. It is more prevalent in males, very aggressive, and normally diagnosed in stage 4 of the disease. It starts in the bones and spreads quickly to the other organs such as the liver, lungs, kidneys, and brain.

Emily’s journey lasted eleven months. She went through numerous surgeries to remove her left kidney and also to stabilize her vertebrae so her spinal cord would not break. She also went through harsh chemotherapy, aggressive radiation treatments, multiple blood transfusions, and labs.

Emily fought her battle with strength, courage and dignity. She hardly complained and tried more than anything to console those around her. She lost her battle with cancer on November 22, 2008.

Emily’s Kids Foundation, Inc. is a 501c 3, nonprofit organization effective 5-19-09. Emily spoke many times of the financial struggles families on the childhood cancer unit faced. Families pay to park, eat, drive back and forth to the hospitals and pay for prescriptions when leaving the hospitals. It was her brainstorm that when she got well, she and her Dad, Craig, would start a foundation to help families with these costs. Upon Emily’s death, a fund was established at Brenner Children’s Hospital to receive memorial contributions. It was agreed that the contributions to this fund be used only for needs like food, gas cards, parking passes and everyday expenses. Emily’s Kids Foundation, Inc. grew out of this idea to enable the other six hospitals in North Carolina with childhood cancer units to receive funds. The tax ID is 27-0221339.

HOW THE MONEY IS USED:

The Foundation has raised several hundred thousands of dollars and distributed funds since 2008. The contributions have been given to the seven children’s hospitals/clinics in North Carolina that treat Heme/Onc patients in the form of gas cards, parking vouchers, gift cards for food, and gift cards for prescriptions.

Emily’s Kids Foundation, Inc., does not conduct interviews or review applications for those in need. The medical staff along with the social workers determine a family’s need. The gifts are given only on an as needed basis. When help is needed, the gifts are available immediately.

In 2015 the “Gold Ribbon Scholarship” program was established. Emily’s Kids Foundation, Inc. created the guidelines and opened the program to students going to college, university or vocational/technical school or even students still in High school, Middle school or Home schooled who may be in need of something to finish their classes. Unlike traditional scholarships, we believe that dealing with cancer far outweighs what the grade point average may be, and we believe in the student.

The required scholarship application forms can be found under the ‘Downloads’ option on the main menu.

Emily’s Kids Foundation, Inc. has worked hard and will continue to do so to provide help to North Carolina Families dealing with pediatric cancer. If you like the idea of the “Gold Ribbon Scholarship” and would like to help, let us “broker” a scholarship for you. We have contacts all across North Carolina and we can locate a student for you that you may want to help. We can and will work with you.

Less than 2% of donated funds are allocated to overhead costs. That means 98% goes straight to the families in need!
